A Prayer for the Church
Maronite Tradition
Glory to your mercies, O Christ our King, Son of God, adored by the universe.

You are our Lord and our God, the guide of our life and our blessed hope. You founded on earth a holy Church, in the image of the one above; According to this image you formed it; with love you made her your spouse; in your mercy you have exalted her; through your suffering you brought her to perfection.

May her loving beauty not be obscured; may her great richness not be impoverished.

Remember the promise made to Peter and fulfill your words in reality.

Fortify her gates, secure her locks, exalt her dignity, raise her ramparts; bless her children, protect her faithful; confirm her priests and overcome all those who hate her.
A Prayer of Farewell After the Liturgy, Before Leaving the Church
Maronite Tradition
Remain in peace, O Altar of God. May the offering that I have taken from you be for the remission of my debts and the pardon of my sins, and may it obtain for me that I may stand before the tribunal of Christ without damnation and without confusion. I do not know if I will have the opportunity to return and offer another sacrifice upon you. Protect me, O Lord, and preserve your holy Church as the way to truth and salvation. Amen.
A Prayer of Thanksgiving for the Church
Armenian Tradition
We thank you, Almighty Father, for having prepared the holy Church for us as a haven of rest, a temple of holiness, where your Holy Trinity is glorified. Alleluia.

We thank you, Christ our King, for having given us life through your vivifying Body and your holy Blood; grant us expiation and great mercy. Alleluia.

We thank you, true Spirit, for having renewed the holy Church; preserve her immaculate, by means of faith in the Trinity, now and forever. Alleluia.

We thank you, O Christ our God, for having given us such a Food of goodness for holiness of life. By means of it preserve us holy and immaculate by living in us with your divine care. Lead us to the pastures of your holy will, O Effecter of good; by means of it fortify us against every snare of the calumniator. Make us worthy to listen to your voice alone, to follow only you, true and victorious Shepherd, and to receive from you the place you prepared for us in your heavenly kingdom, O God and Lord Jesus Christ our Savior, who are blessed with the Father and your Holy Spirit, now and always for ever and ever. Amen.
A Prayer to Be a Disciple of Christ
Ethiopian Tradition
O Lord of knowledge and Announcer of wisdom, who have revealed to us what was hidden in the depths of darkness, Giver of the voice of joy to those who preach the breadth of your strength, it is you who in the greatness of your goodness called Paul who first had been a persecutor, and made him into a vessel of election, and you took delight in him, so that he would be an apostle and preacher of the Gospel of your Kingdom. O Christ, our God, you are the lover of men. O kind Lord, give us understanding without weariness, a pure conscience which does not depart from you, so that we know and understand and fully comprehend the measure of your holy doctrine which now comes from him, and as he was the imitator of your life, O Lord, so grant that we be his imitators in works and faith and praise your holy Name and that we glory at all times of the shame of your cross, since yours is the kingdom, the power, the greatness and the might, honor and glory for ever and ever.
Act of Consecration to the Holy Family
Approved by Pope Leo XIII. 20 June 1892
(It is prayed kneeling down before an image of the Holy Family. If a priest is not present, it is led by the head of the household.)

O Most Loving Jesus, Who by Thy ineffable virtues and by the example of Thy domestic life didst consecrate the family which Thou didst choose on earth; in Thy clemency look down upon this household humbly prostrate before Thee and imploring Thy mercy. Remember that this family belongs to Thee, for to Thee we have in a special way dedicated and devoted ourselves. Look upon us in Thy loving kindness, preserve us from every danger, give us help in the time of need, and grant us the grace to persevere to the end in the imitation of Thy Holy Family; that having revered Thee and loved Thee faithfully upon earth, we may bless and praise Thee eternally in heaven.

O Mary, most sweet Mother, to thy intercession we have recourse, knowing that thy Divine Son will hear thy prayers.

And do thou, O glorious Patriarch Saint Joseph, assist us by thy powerful mediation, and offer by the hands of Mary our prayers to Jesus.
Act of Consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus
Approved by Pope St. Pius X. 19 May 1908
(It is prayed kneeling down before an image of the Holy Family. If a priest is not present, it is led by the head of the household.)

O Sacred Heart of Jesus, Who didst make known to St. Margaret Mary Thine ardent desire to reign over Christian families, behold us assembled here today to proclaim Thine absolute dominion over our home.

Henceforth we purpose to lead a life like unto Thine, so that amongst us may flourish the virtues for which Thou didst promise peace on earth, and for this end we will banish from our midst the spirit of the world which Thou dost abhor so much.

Thou wilt reign over our understanding by the simplicity of our faith. Thou wilt reign over our hearts by an ardent love for Thee; and may the flame of this love be ever kept burning in our hearts by the frequent reception of the Holy Eucharist.

Deign, O Divine Heart, to preside over our meetings, to bless our undertakings, both spiritual and temporal, to banish all worry and care, to sanctify our joys, and soothe our sorrows. If any of us should ever have the misfortune to grieve Thy Sacred Heart, remind him of Thy goodness and mercy towards the repentant sinner.

Lastly, when the hour of separation will sound, and death will plunge our home into mourning, then shall we all, and every one of us, be resigned to Thy eternal decrees, and seek consolation in the thought that we shall one day be reunited in Heaven, where we shall sing the praises and blessings of Thy Sacred Heart for all eternity.

May the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and the glorious Patriarch St. Joseph, offer Thee this our Consecration, and remind us of the same all the days of our life. Glory to the Divine Heart of Jesus, our King and our Father. Amen.
Acts of Faith, Hope, and Love

Act of Faith

O my God, I firmly believe that you are one God in three divine Persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. I believe that your divine Son became man and died for our sins and that he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe these and all the truths which the Holy Catholic Church teaches because you have revealed them who are eternal truth and wisdom, who can neither deceive nor be deceived. In this faith I intend to live and die. Amen.

Act of Hope

O Lord God, I hope by your grace for the pardon of all my sins and after life here to gain eternal happiness because you have promised it who are infinitely powerful, faithful, kind, and merciful. In this hope I intend to live and die. Amen.

Act of Love

O Lord God, I love you above all things and I love my neighbor for your sake because you are the highest, infinite and perfect good, worthy of all my love. In this love I intend to live and die. Amen.

Adoro te Devote
O Godhead hid, devoutly I adore You, Who truly are within the forms before me; To You my heart I bow with bended knee, As failing quite in contemplating You.

Jesu, eternal Shepherd! hear our cry; Increase the faith of all whose souls on You rely.

Sight, touch, and taste in You are each deceived; The ear alone most safely is believed: I believe all the Son of God has spoken, Than truth’s own word there is no truer token.

God only on the cross lay hid from view; But here lies hid at once the manhood too; And I, in both professing my belief, Make the same prayer as the repentant thief.

Your wounds, as Thomas saw, I do not see; Yet You confess my Lord and God to be; Make me believe You evermore and more; In You my hope, in You my love to store.

O You memorial of our Lord’s own dying! O living bread, to mortals life supplying! Make You my soul henceforth on You to live, Ever a taste of heavenly sweetness give.

O loving Pelican! O Jesus Lord! Unclean I am, but cleanse me in Your Blood! Of which a single drop, for sinners split, Can purge the entire world from all its guilt.

Jesus, whom, for the present, veil’d I see, What I so thirst for, oh! vouchsafe to me; That I may see Your countenance unfolding, And may be blest Your glory in beholding. Amen.
Adsumus
We have come, O Lord, Holy Spirit, we have come before you, hampered indeed by our many and grievous sins, but for a special purpose gathered together in your name.

Come to us, be with us, and enter our hearts.

Teach us what we are to do and what ought to concern us; show us what we must accomplish, in order that, with your help, we may be able to please you in all things.

May you alone be the author and the finisher of our judgments, who alone with God the Father and his Son possess a glorious name.

Do not allow us to disturb the order of justice, you who love equity above all things. Let not ignorance draw us into devious paths. Let not partiality sway our minds or respect of riches or persons pervert our judgment.

But unite our hearts to you by the gift of your grace alone, that we may be one in you and never forsake the truth; as we are gathered together in your name, so may we in all things hold fast to justice tempered by mercy, that in this life our judgment may never be at variance with you and in the life to come we may attain to everlasting rewards for deeds well done. Amen.

Creed

Apostles' Creed

I believe in God,
the Father Almighty,
Creator of heaven and earth,
and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried;
He descended into hell;
on the third day He rose again from the dead;
He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from there He will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Holy Catholic Church,
the communion of Saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and life everlasting.

Nicene Creed

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.
I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.
I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.
De Profundis
Psalm 130
Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord: Lord, hear my voice! O let your ears be attentive to the voice of my pleading. If you, O Lord, should mark our guilt, Lord, who would survive? But with you is found forgiveness: for this we revere you. My soul is waiting for the Lord; I count on his word. My soul is longing for the Lord more than the watchman for daybreak. Let the watchman count on daybreak and Israel on the Lord. Because with the Lord there is mercy and fullness of redemption; Israel indeed he will redeem from all its iniquity.
Direct, we beseech you
Actiones nostras

Domine, Deus omnipotens
Lord, God Almighty, you have brought us safely to the beginning of this day. Defend us today by your mighty power, that we may not fall into any sin, but that all our words may so proceed and all our thoughts and actions be so directed, as to be always just in your sight. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Eternal rest
Requiem aeternam
Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace.

Do not abandon us, O God!

For every glory, honor, and adoration is due to you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, now and always and for ever and ever. Amen.

Hail, Holy Queen
Salve, Regina
Hail, holy Queen, Mother of mercy; Hail, our life, our sweetness and our hope. To you do we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To you do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, your eyes of mercy toward us; and after this our exile show unto us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.
Holy Mary, Help the Miserable
Sancta Maria, succurre miseris
Holy Mary, help the miserable, strengthen the discouraged, comfort the sorrowful, pray for your people, plead for the clergy, intercede for all women consecrated to God. May all who venerate you feel now your help and protection. Be ready to help us when we pray, and bring back to us the answers to our prayers. Make it your continual concern to pray for the people of God, for you were blessed by God and were made worthy to bear the Redeemer of the world, who lives and reigns forever. Amen.
Intercession for the Deceased from Liturgy of St. James
Syro-Antiochian Tradition
Lord, O Lord, God of the pure spirits and of every flesh, be mindful of us all, of those we have remembered and of all we have not remembered and who have left this world with glorious faith. Give repose to their souls, to their bodies, to their spirits. Save them from future damnation and make them worthy of the joy, which is in the bosom of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, where the light of your countenance shines, where pain, anguish, and cries are banished. Do not impute to them any fault; do not enter into judgment with your servants, because no living being is justified in your sight and because no man on earth is immune from sin and pure of every filth except for our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, through whom we, too, hope to obtain mercy and the pardon of our sins and of those of our deceased.

Give rest to their souls; cancel our faults and their faults committed before you willingly or unwillingly, consciously or unconsciously.

Grant them rest. Forgive, O God, and pardon the voluntary and involuntary sins committed consciously or unconsciously by word, work or omissions, by secret thoughts, or publicly, deliberately or through error and which your holy Name knows.

Grant us a Christian ending without sin and unite us at the feet of your elect when you will, where you will and how you will, without us having to blush for our sins because in this as in all things your holy and blessed Name, the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ and of the Holy Spirit, be praised and glorified now and for all ages. Amen.

Magnificat
My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior; Because He has regarded the lowliness of His handmaid; for behold, henceforth all generations shall call me blessed; Because He who is mighty has done great things for me, and Holy is His Name; And His mercy is from generation to generation on those who fear Him. He has shown might with His arm, He has scattered the proud in the conceit of their heart. He has put down the mighty from their thrones, and has exalted the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty. He has given help to Israel, His servant, mindful of His mercy - Even as He spoke to our father - to Abraham and to his posterity forever.
Mary, Mother of Grace
Maria, Mater Gratiae
Mary, Mother of grace and Mother of mercy, shield me from the enemy and receive me at the hour of my death.
Memorare
Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to your protection, implored your help, or sought thine intercession was left unaided.

Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto you, O Virgin of virgins, my mother; to you do I come, before you I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in your mercy hear and answer me. Amen.
Miserere
Psalm 51
Have mercy on me, God, in your kindness. In your compassion blot out my offense. O wash me more and more from my guilt and cleanse me from my sin. My offenses truly I know them; my sin is always before me. Against you, you alone, have I sinned; what is evil in your sight I have done. That you may be justified when you give sentence and be without reproach when you judge. O see, in guilt was I born, a sinner was I conceived. Indeed you love truth in the heart; then in the secret of my heart teach me wisdom. O purify me, then I shall be clean; O wash me, I shall be whiter than snow. Make me hear rejoicing and gladness, that the bones you have crushed may revive. From my sins turn away your face and blot out all my guilt. A pure heart create for me, O God, put a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me away from your presence, nor deprive me of your holy spirit. Give me again the joy of your help; with a spirit of fervor sustain me, that I may teach transgressors your ways and sinners may return to you. O rescue me, God, my helper, and my tongue shall ring out your goodness. O Lord, open my lips and my mouth shall declare your praise. For in sacrifice you take no delight, burnt offering from me you would refuse; my sacrifice, a contrite spirit. A humbled, contrite heart you will not spurn. In your goodness, show favor to Zion: rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. Then you will be pleased with lawful sacrifice, holocausts offered on your altar. Amen.
Most Sweet Jesus
Iesu dulcissime
O sweet Jesus, Whose overflowing charity for men is requited by so much forgetfulness, negligence and contempt, behold us prostrate before Your altar eager to repair by a special act of homage the cruel indifference and injuries, to which Your loving Heart is everywhere subject.

Mindful alas! that we ourselves have had a share in such great indignities, which we now deplore from the depths of our hearts, we humbly ask Your pardon and declare our readiness to atone by voluntary expiation not only for our own personal offences, but also for the sins of those, who straying far from the path of salvation, refuse in their obstinate infidelity to follow You, their Shepherd and Leader, or, renouncing the vows of their Baptism, have cast off the sweet yoke of Your law.

We are now resolved to expiate each and every deplorable outrage committed against You; we are determined to make amends for the manifold offences against Christian modesty in unbecoming dress and behavior, for all the foul seductions laid to ensnare the feet of the innocent, for the frequent violation of Sundays and holidays, and the shocking blasphemies uttered against You and Your Saints. We wish also to make amends for the insults to which Your Vicar on earth and Your priests are subjected, for the profanation, by conscious neglect or terrible acts of sacrilege, of the very Sacrament of Your Divine love; and lastly for the public crimes of nations who resist the rights and the teaching authority of the Church which You hast founded.

Would, O Divine Jesus, we were able to wash away such abominations with our blood. We now offer, in reparation for these violations of Your Divine honor, the satisfaction You didst once make to Your eternal Father on the Cross and which You dost continue to renew daily on our altars; we offer it in union with the acts of atonement of Your Virgin Mother and all the Saints and of the pious faithful on earth; and we sincerely promise to make reparation, as far as we can with the help of Your grace, for all neglect of Your great love and for the sins we and others have committed in the past. Henceforth we will live a life of unwavering faith, of purity of conduct, of perfect observance of the precepts of the gospel and especially that of charity. We promise to the best of our power to prevent others from offending You and to bring as many as possible to follow You.

O loving Jesus, through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary our model in reparation, deign to receive the voluntary offering we make of this act of expiation; and by the crowning gift of perseverance keep us faithful unto death in our duty and the allegiance we owe to You, so that we may all one day come to that happy home, where You with the Father and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns God, world without end. Amen.
Most Sweet Jesus, Redeemer
Iesu dulcissime, Redemptor
MOST sweet Jesus, Redeemer of the human race, look down upon us humbly prostrate before Thee. We are Thine, and Thine we wish to be; but to be more surely united with Thee, behold each one of us freely consecrates himself today to Thy Most Sacred Heart. Many indeed have never known Thee; many, too, despising Thy precepts, have rejected Thee. Have mercy on them all, most merciful Jesus, and draw them to Thy Sacred Heart.

Be King, O Lord, not only of the faithful who have never forsaken Thee, but also of the prodigal children who have abandoned Thee; grant that they may quickly return to their Father's house, lest they die of wretchedness and hunger.

Be King of those who are deceived by erroneous opinions, or whom discord keeps aloof, and call them back to the harbor of truth and the unity of faith, so that soon there may be but one flock and one Shepherd.

Grant, O Lord, to Thy Church assurance of freedom and immunity from harm; give tranquility of order to all nations; make the earth resound from pole to pole with one cry: Praise to the divine Heart that wrought our salvation; to It be glory and honor for ever! Amen.

Psalm 142
(Confidence in the Lord)

Lord, listen to my prayer; in your truth give heed to my request and in your justice hear me,

And enter not into judgment with Your servant since of all the living, none is just before You.

The enemy has pursued my soul, he has crushed my life into the ground;

He has forced me to dwell in darkness like those long dead.

My spirit was overwhelmed with grief and within me my heart was troubled.

Remembering the days of old, I meditated on all your deeds, I thought of the works of your hands.

I stretched out my hands to You; like a parched land my soul longed for You.

Listen to me without delay, O Lord: my spirit has failed me;

Turn not Your face away from me nor let me sink in the pit like the others.

Grant that I may hear Your love at dawn for I have placed my hope in You.

O Lord, let me know which way I shall go for I have lifted up my soul to You.

Deliver me, O Lord, from my enemies: it is to You that I have fled.

Teach me to do Your will, for You are my God; may your good Spirit lead me over level ground.

For the sake of Your name, O Lord, You will keep me alive;

In Your saving bounty, You will deliver my soul from oppression,
And in Your loving kindness, You will destroy my enemies

And bring to naught all those who grieve my soul, for I am your servant.

The Lord is God (4th tone)
The Lord is God, and He has appeared to us. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

V. Give thanks to the Lord and call upon his name.

The Lord is God, and He has appeared to us. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

V. All the nations encompassed me: in the name of the Lord, I crushed them.

The Lord is God, and He has appeared to us. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

V. This was done by the Lord: it is wonderful in our eyes.

The Lord is God, and He has appeared to us. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Troparion (4th tone)

To the Mother of God let us poor sinners run now diligently and fall down before her in repentance; let us cry out from the depth of our souls: O Lady, in your compassion come to our aid! Make haste, for we are perishing under the multitude of our sins. Do not turn away your servants empty-handed, for you are our only hope.

Glory be to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and always and forever and ever. Amen.

We will never cease, O Mother of God, although unworthy, to proclaim your power. If you no longer intercede for us, who will deliver us from so many misfortunes? Who would ever have preserved us free until now? We shall never leave you, O Lady, for you always save your servants from all tribulations.

Psalm 50 (Prayer of Repentance)

O God, have mercy on me in the greatness of Your love;

In the abundance of Your tender mercies, wipe out my offense. Wash me thoroughly from malice and cleanse me from sin,
For I am well aware of my malice and my sin is before me always.

It is You alone I have offended, I have done what is evil in Your sight, Wherefore You are just in Your deeds and triumphant in Your judgment. Behold, I was born in iniquities and in sins my mother conceived me.
But You are the lover of truth: You have shown me the depths and secrets of Your wisdom.

Wash me with hyssop and I shall be pure, cleanse me and I shall be whiter than snow. Let me hear sounds of joy and feasting: the bones that were afflicted shall rejoice.
Turn Your face away from my offenses and wipe off all my sins.

A spotless heart create in me, O God; renew a steadfast spirit in my breast. Cast me not afar from Your face, take not Your blessed Spirit out of me.
Restore to me the joy of Your salvation and let Your guiding Spirit dwell in me. I will teach Your ways to the sinners and the wicked shall return to You.
Deliver me from blood-guilt, O God, my saving God, and my tongue will joyfully sing Your justice.

O Lord, You shall open my lips, and my mouth will declare Your praise.

Had You desired sacrifice, I would have offered it, but You will not be satisfied with whole-burnt offerings.

Sacrifice to God is a contrite spirit: a crushed and humbled heart God will not spurn.

In Your kindness, O Lord, be bountiful to Sion; may the walls of Jerusalem be restored. Then will You delight in just oblation, in sacrifice and whole-burnt offerings.

Then shall they offer calves upon your altar.

Gospel

Reading from the Gospel (Luke 1: 39-48, 56)

Priest: Let us pray to the Lord, our God, to make us worthy of hearing the Holy Gospel. All: Lord, have mercy! (3 times)
Priest: Wisdom! Let us stand and listen to the holy Gospel. Peace † to all. All: And to your spirit.
Priest: A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Saint Luke the Evangelist. All: Glory to You, O Lord, glory to You!
Priest: Let us be attentive!

Now in those days, Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a town of Juda. And she entered the house of Zachary and saluted Elizabeth. And it came to pass, when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary that the babe in her womb leapt. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, and cried out with a loud voice, saying: “Blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb! And how have I deserved that the Mother of my Lord should come to me? For behold, the moment that the sound of thy greeting came to my ears, the babe in my womb leapt for joy. And blessed is she who has believed, because the things promised her by the Lord shall be accomplished.” And Mary said: “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour; because He has regarded the lowliness of his handmaid; for, behold, henceforth all generations shall call me blessed; because He who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is His name; and His love is from generation to generation to those who fear Him. He has shown might in His arm, He has scattered the proud in the conceit of their heart. He has put down the mighty from their seat, and has exalted the humble. He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich He has sent away empty.
He has given help to Israel, his servant being mindful of His love. Even as He spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his posterity forever.” And Mary remained with her about three months and returned to her own house.

Choir: Glory to You, O Lord, glory to You! The choir continues singing:
Glory be to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.

O Father, O Word, O Holy Spirit, Trinity one in essence, take away the multitude of our iniquities.

Now and always and forever and ever. Amen.

Through the intercessions of the Mother of God, O merciful One, take away the multitude of our sins.

Have mercy on me, O God in Your goodness; in Your great tenderness take away my iniquities!

O Most Holy Lady, do not entrust me to any human help, but receive the prayer of your servant. All: It is fitting and right to call you blessed, O Theotokos, the ever-blessed and all- blameless, and the Mother of our God, higher in honour than the Cherubim and more glorious beyond compare than the Seraphim. You gave birth to God the Word in virginity. You are truly Mother of God: you do we exalt.

The priest incenses the holy table, the icon of the Mother of God, and the people while they say:

Let us sing the praise of the Virgin more lofty than Heaven and more pure than the shining stars. Let us praise, O faithful, the Queen of all creation who has delivered us from the curse.

My body ails and my soul is sick because of the multitude of my sins. To you I come for shelter, O Woman full of grace: be my help, O you the hope of those who are beyond all hope!

O Lady, Mother of the Saviour, receive the supplications of your unworthy servants: deign to intercede before your Son; be our mediator, O Queen of creation!

O Mother of God, worthy of all praise, we sing to you this hymn, exulting joyfully: O Mother of God, together with the Forerunner and with all the saints, pray that your Son may have mercy on us.

O you all the hosts of angels, and you the Forerunner, and you the Twelve Apostles, and you all the saints, pray with the Mother of God for the salvation of our souls.

The priest, standing before the icon of the Mother of God, makes a deep reverence and says:

May the lips of the heretics be sealed, of those who refuse to bow before your honorable and peace-giving icon, painted by Luke the apostle and great saint.

FINAL HYMN

The people kiss the icon of the Mother of God during the recitation of this final hymn:

Gracious Virgin, victory will come to those who put their trust in the strength of your arm, for we sinners who stoop with the weight of our sins have none before God to plead for but you.

O Mother of God most high, we bend our knee to you: deliver your faithful servants from every kind of trouble.

You are joy to the distressed, you are strength to the oppressed, you are food to those who sink into despair.

You console all the strangers, you support all the blind, and you come and visit all the sick. You are shelter to the weary, you are comfort to the crushed, you are heavenly assistance to the orphans.

You are the Mother of God Most High, and so we pray to you: hasten, O immaculate one, and save your faithful servants!
In you is all my hope, O Mother of God: place me under the wings of your protection.

All together: Through the prayers of our holy Fathers, O Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and save us. Amen.
O Sacred Banquet
O sacrum convivium
O sacred banquet, in which Christ is received, the memory of his Passion is renewed, the mind is filled with grace, and a pledge of future glory is given to us.
Our Father, and Apostle's Creed

Our Father

Our Father in heaven, holy be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Apostle's Creed

I believe in God,
the Father Almighty,
Creator of heaven and earth,
and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried;
He descended into hell;
on the third day He rose again from the dead;
He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from there He will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Holy Catholic Church,
the communion of Saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and life everlasting.
Penitential Psalms

Psalm 6

Lord, do not reprove me in your anger: punish me not in your rage. Have mercy on me, Lord, I have no strength; Lord, heal me, my body is racked; my soul is racked with pain. But you, a Lord, how long? Return, Lord, rescue my soul. Save me in your merciful love, for in death no one remembers you; from the grave, who can give you praise? I am exhausted with my groaning; every night I drench my pillow with tears. My eye wastes away from grief; I have grown old surrounded by my foes. Leave me, all you who do evil; for the Lord has heard my weeping. The Lord has heard my plea; the Lord will accept my prayer. All my foes will retire in confusion, foiled and suddenly confounded.

Psalm 32

Happy the man whose offense is forgiven, whose sin is remitted. a happy the man to whom the Lord imputes no guilt, in whose spirit is no guile. I kept it secret and my frame was wasted. I groaned all the day long, for night and day your hand was heavy upon me. Indeed, my strength was dried up as by the summer's heal. But now I have acknowledged my sins; my guilt I did not hide. I said: "I will confess my offense to the Lord." And you, Lord, have forgiven the guilt of my sin. So let every good man pray to you in the time of need. The floods of water may reach high but him they shall not reach. You are my hiding place, a Lord; you save me from distress. You surround me with cries of deliverance. I will instruct you and teach you the way you should go; I will give you counsel with my eye upon you. Be not like the horse and mule, unintelligent, needing bridle and bit, else they will not approach you. Many sorrows has the wicked but he who trusts in the Lord, loving mercy surrounds him. Rejoice, rejoice in the Lord, exult, you just! a come, ring out your joy, all you upright of heart./p>

Psalm 38

O Lord, do not rebuke me in your anger; do not punish me, Lord in your rage. Your arrows have sunk deep in me; your hand has come down upon me. Through your anger all my body is sick: through my sin, there is no health in my limbs. My guilt towers higher than my head; it is a weight too heavy to bear. My wounds are foul and festering, the result of my own folly. I am bowed and brought to my knees. I go mourning all the day long. All my frame burns with fever; all my body is sick. Spent and utterly crushed, I cry aloud in anguish of heart. O Lord, you know all my longing: my groans are not hidden from you. My heart throbs, my strength is spent; the very light has gone from my eyes. My friends avoid me like a leper; those closest to me stand afar off. Those who plot against my life lay snares; those who seek my ruin speak of harm, planning treachery all the day long. But I am like the deaf who cannot hear, like the dumb unable to speak. I am like a man who hears nothing in whose mouth is no defense. I count on you, O Lord: it is you, Lord God, who will answer. I pray: "Do not let them mock me, those who triumph if my foot should slip." For I am on the point of falling and my pain is always before me. I confess that I am guilty and my sin fills me with dismay. My wanton enemies are numberless and my lying foes are many. They repay me evil for good and attack me for seeking what is right. O Lord, do not forsake me! My God, do not stay afar off! Make haste and come to my help, O Lord, my God, my savior!

Indeed you love truth in the heart; then in the secret of my heart teach me wisdom. a purify me, then I shall be clean; O wash me, I shall be whiter than snow.

Psalm 102

O Lord, listen to my prayer and let my cry for help reach you. Do not hide your face from me in the day of my distress. Turn your ear towards me and answer me quickly when I call. For my days are vanishing like smoke, my bones burn away like a fire. My heart is withered like the grass. I forget to eat my bread. I cry with all my strength and my skin clings to my bones. I have become like a pelican in the wilderness, like an owl in desolate places. I lie awake and I moan like some lonely bird on a roof. All the day long my foes revile me; those who hate me use my name as a curse. The bread I eat is ashes; my drink is mingled with tears. In your anger, Lord, and your fury you have lifted me up and thrown me down. My days are like a passing shadow and I wither away like the grass.

But you, O Lord, will endure for ever and your name from age to age. You will arise and have mercy on Zion: for this is the time to have mercy; yes, the time appointed has come, for your servants love her very stones, are moved with pity even for her dust. The nations shall fear the name of the Lord and all the earth's kings your glory, when the Lord shall build up Zion again and appear in all his glory. Then he will turn to the prayers of the helpless; he will not despise their prayers. Let this be written for ages to come that a people yet unborn may praise the Lord; for the Lord leaned down from his sanctuary on high. He looked down from heaven to the earth that he might hear the groans of the prisoners and free those condemned to die. The sons of your servants shall dwell untroubled, and their race shall endure before you that the name of the Lord may be proclaimed in Zion and his praise in the heart of Jerusalem, when peoples and kingdoms are gathered together to pay their homage to the Lord.

He has broken my strength in mid-course; he has shortened the days of my life. I say to God: "Do not take me away before my days are complete, you, whose days last from age to age. Long ago you founded the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands. They will perish but you will remain. They will all wear out like a garment. You will change them like clothes that are changed. But you neither change, nor have an end. The children of your servants will continue, and their descendants will be established before you."

Psalm 143, Verses 1-11

Lord, listen to my prayer; turn your ear to my appeal. You are faithful, you are just; give answer. Do not call your servant to judgment, for no one is just in your sight. The enemy pursues my soul; he has crushed my life to the ground; he has made me dwell in darkness like the dead, long forgotten. Therefore my spirit fails; my heart is numb within me. I remember the days that are past: I ponder all your works. I muse on what your hand has wrought and to you I stretch out my hands. Like a parched land my soul thirsts for you. Lord, make haste and answer; for my spirit fails within me. Do not hide your face lest I become like those in the grave. In the morning let me know your love, for I put my trust in you. Make me know the way I should walk: to you I lift up my soul. Rescue me, Lord, from my enemies; I have fled to you for refuge. Teach me to do your will for you, O Lord, are my God. Let your good spirit guide me in ways that are level and smooth. For your name's sake, Lord, save my life; in your justice save my soul from distress.

Prayers for the Forgiveness of Sins
Ethiopian Tradition
O golden thurible, who carried the blessed burning coal, taken from the sanctuary, which forgives sins and destroys crimes: it is the Word of the Lord made flesh in you, who offered himself to his Father, incense and an acceptable sacrifice.

We adore you, O Christ, together with your compassionate, heavenly Father, and your Holy vivifying Spirit, because you have come and have saved us.

O Lord our God, as you once destroyed the walls of Jericho by means of the hand of Joshua your servant, son of Nun, so destroy the walls of my sins and of the sins of your people by means of the hands of me your servant.
Prayer for the Faithful Departed
Byzantine Tradition
God of the spirits and of all flesh, who have destroyed death and annihilated the devil and given life to your world, may you yourself, O Lord, grant to the soul of your deceased servant N. rest in a place of light, a verdant place, a place of freshness, from where suffering, pain, and cries are far removed. Do You, O good and compassionate God, forgive every fault committed by him in word, work, or thought; because there is no man who lives and does not sin. You alone are without sin and your justice is justice throughout the ages and your word is truth.

Since you, O Christ our God, are the resurrection, the life and the repose of your deceased servant N., we give you glory together with your un-begotten Father with your most holy, good, and vivifying Spirit, now and always and for ever and ever.

Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen

Forth from each eternally,
Be salvation, honor, blessing,
Might and endless majesty.

The Prayer “Lakhu Mara” (To You, O Lord)
Chaldean Tradition
When the essence of the sweetness of your love, O Lord our God, will make itself felt in us, and when our souls will be enlightened by the knowledge of your truth, then will we be worthy to go forth to meet your beloved Son as he comes from heaven and there render thanks and glorify you unceasingly in your victorious Church, full of help and happiness, because you are the Lord and Creator of everything, through all ages.

For all the help and the incomprehensible graces that you have granted we give you thanks and we glorify you unceasingly in your victorious Church, full of every help and happiness, because you are Lord and Creator of everything, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, through all ages.

“Lakhu Mara”: To you, O Lord of the universe, we proclaim our confession, and we glorify you, Jesus Christ, because you are the resurrection of our bodies and the savior of our souls.

You indeed, Lord, are the resurrection of our bodies and the good savior of our souls and the everlasting keeper of our life, and we are bound to thank you, adore and glorify you at every moment, O Lord of the universe through all ages.
To you, O Blessed Joseph
Ad te, beate Iosep
Through that charity which bound you to the Immaculate Virgin Mother of God and through the paternal love with which you embraced the Child Jesus, we humbly beg you graciously to regard the inheritance which Jesus Christ has purchased by his Blood, and with your power and strength to aid us in our necessities. O most watchful Guardian of the Holy Family, defend the chosen children of Jesus Christ; O most loving father, ward off from us every contagion of error and corrupting influence; O our most mighty protector, be kind to us and from heaven assist us in our struggle with the power of darkness. As once you rescued the Child Jesus from deadly peril, so now protect God’s Holy Church from the snares of the enemy and from all adversity; shield, too, each one of us by your constant protection, so that, supported by your example and your aid, we may be able to live piously, to die in holiness, and to obtain eternal happiness in heaven. Amen.
Visita, quaesumus, Domine
Visit, we beg you, O Lord, this dwelling, and drive from it all snares of the enemy: let your holy Angels dwell herein, to keep us in peace; and let your blessing be always upon us. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
We give You thanks
Agimus tibi gratias
We give You thanks, Almighty God, for all your blessings: who live and reign for ever and ever. Amen.
Veni Creator
Come, Holy Spirit, Creator blest,
and in our souls take up Your rest;
come with Your grace and heavenly aid
to fill the hearts which You hast made.
O comforter, to You we cry,
O heavenly gift of God Most High,
O fount of life and fire of love,
and sweet anointing from above.

You in Your sevenfold gifts are known;
You, finger of God's hand we own;
You, promise of the Father, You
Who dost the tongue with power imbue.

Kindle our sense from above,
and make our hearts o'erflow with love;
with patience firm and virtue high
the weakness of our flesh supply.

Far from us drive the foe we dread,
and grant us Your peace instead;
so shall we not, with You for guide,
turn from the path of life aside.

Oh, may Your grace on us bestow
the Father and the Son to know;
and You, through endless times confessed,
of both the eternal Spirit blest.
